Memorial Day 2012

Today is Memorial Day 2012, a holiday for most and a day to devote to remembering those who have served us so well throughout our history as a nation.

Mostly we recall those who served in uniform, but there is another numerous group of dedicated citizens who sacrifice for their country.
I’m talking about the men and women who toiled, and still do, to lead and work with our military forces. I’m talking about the men and women who provided, and still do, the information that saved lives in battle and ensured victory. Many even gave their lives up in that service.
I’m talking about the men and women who worked, and still do, to provide the very best equipment to our armed forces. They, too, saved lives and ensured victory.

And, finally, I’m talking about the men and women who give up high salaries and fat bonuses to toil in the trenches of our governments at the federal, state and local levels. They do so despite the hatred, envy and resentment that they face every day.
So, keep in mind today and every day that your life is easier, safer and a little less worrisome because of all those people who have worked to make it so. Keep this in mind the next time you are moved to agree with the demagogic politicians trying to convince you that all those men and women are leeches on society who deserve to have their pay cut, their retirements ruined and their self-esteem destroyed.
